HONIARA, 21 February 2019 -- The Director-General of the FFA, Dr Manu Tupou-Roosen, today unveiled a special logo to celebrate 40 years of cooperation with members of the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA). The logo will be used to promote a programme of activities throughout 2019, to celebrate this important milestone.

“It’s an honour to announce the logo,” Dr Tupou-Roosen said. “The 40th Anniversary provides an opportunity to deepen our engagement with FFA Members and key stakeholders in addressing new and ongoing challenges facing the fisheries sector.”

Plans are underway with members and partners including the media and Council of Regional Organisations in the Pacific to mark 40 years of achievements.

Since 1979, the FFA has championed coastal states’ rights in the sustainable management of the region’s valuable offshore fish stocks.  Headquartered in Honiara, Solomon Islands, the Agency has worked closely with member countries to bring enhanced economic benefits, employment, food security and a better quality of life to all island communities.

Dr Tupou-Roosen added “The Forum Fisheries Committee and its Ministerial meeting, together with the inaugural Pacific Fisheries Ministers meeting scheduled in the Federated States of Micronesia mid-year will be central to these celebrations.”

The Director General said the FFA Secretariat was grateful for the enduring support of Members, including Australia and New Zealand, and international supporters of the FFA’s work through financial assistance and advocacy for coastal states’ rights.  The support of the host government, Solomon Islands, was also greatly appreciated.

The FFA acknowledges also the outstanding scientific work of the Pacific Community in carrying out stock assessments relating to the four key tuna species in skipjack, albacore bigeye and yellowfin. These have underpinned management decisions by FFA members over the past 40 years.  Close ongoing collaboration with the PNA will remain an essential element of the regional fisheries sector.

“Additionally, I congratulate all current and former staff and member country representatives who have contributed to four decades of outstanding effort and dedication in advancing the interests of the Island countries within the regional fisheries sector,” Dr Tupou-Roosen said. “This is an achievement for all of us and is testament to the power of effective Regional Cooperation.”

Copies of the 40th anniversary logo are available for publication by the media.  For copies, or for interviews with the FFA Director General, please contact, FFA Media Officer Donna Hoerder -- [email protected]
