The FFA DevFish 2 project has recently commissioned a study of the feasibility of establishing a regional Competent Authority Support Unit. This report summarises the main findings of the study.
The Fisheries Development Division of the Forum Fisheries Agency is pleased to release the final report "A Forward Looking Study of Development Opportunities in FFA Member Countries in the Tuna Industry". The report provides an overview of recent developments in the tuna industry, particularly changes in technology and considers the implications of such changes for Pacific Island Countries.
The report was funded by the Australian Aid Program with additional support from the EU funded DevFish2 Project.
FFA's annual update monitoring key parameters for the economic conditions of the WCPO tuna fishery and its impact on FFA members is attached for download, with some amendments for public use and sharing. The Economic Indicators report is divided into 4 broad sections: ‘Global tuna production’ (Section 2), WCP-CA estimated catch, values and economic conditions, (Section 3), ‘Domestic development indicators’ (Section 4) and Summary and conclusions (Section 5).
FFA's Fisheries Development Division through its EU-funded DEVFISH II project has supported a significant focus on national compliance systems. This work is done by national 'competent authorities' to meet the standards of the EU IUU regulation and the regulatory standards of EU accredited food safety Competent Authorities. Establishment and strengthening across some member nations has taken a focus in two areas-- food safety standards covering tuna at all stages from the ocean to the consumer, and Illegal, Unregulated and Unreported fishing.
FFA HQ, Honiara, SOLOMON ISLANDS. – More than 30 Solomon Islands Fisheries officials and tuna industry managers spent last week in Noro, Western Province, getting into the details of the country’s tuna industry. They put theory into practice while looking at national and global standards for tuna Catch Certification compliance guidelines and protocols.
