As a Legal Counsel at the Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA), you will report to the Director-General and Deputy Director-General, playing a crucial role in the strategic legal management of the Agency’s operations, while staying updated with emerging legal areas such as intellectual property and corporate law.

Your primary responsibility includes offering high-level legal advice across FFA’s diverse work program, managing the Legal Unit, and providing expert legal counsel to FFA Members on international fisheries law and national fisheries legislation.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Deliver comprehensive legal and policy advice to FFA and Member governments
  • Effectively lead and monitor the Legal Unit’s operations and initiatives
  • Ensure the development and implementation of robust legal frameworks
  • Facilitate high-level international negotiations and legal advocacy
  • Oversee a dynamic team with varying skills and experience, contributing to the development of international fisheries law

What you bring to the team

We are seeking a dedicated, analytical individual with a Master of Laws specialising in international fisheries law or equivalent, and at least 8 years of proven experience in providing legal advice on fisheries to a government department or regional fisheries organisation of which 3 years as a Manager.

You are someone who has a sound understanding of the principles of international fisheries management, issues related to Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing and international fisheries law, and international law with a working knowledge of fisheries management issues in the Pacific region

You must also have:

  • Deep understanding of international fisheries law and fisheries governance
  • Excellent communication skills, with proficiency in legal analysis and policy formulation
  • Proven experience in leading teams and managing complex legal programs

For your work and effort as our Legal Counsel, you will receive a competitive salary package of circa US$109,880 (tax-free, for citizens of most countries), negotiable to earn more based on your skills and experience.
