Bottled Tuna Workshop Guide Released

Bottled tuna is a unique product that potentially provides small scale fishers in Small Islands Developing States (SIDS) with an entrepreneurial opportunity. Bottled tuna production can be undertaken with a relatively small investment and has the potential to provide good financial returns to the business operator, especially in areas with access to the tourism sector.

This guide book is prepared by Dr. Taro Kawamoto, FFA’s Tuna Industry Adviser on secondment from the Overseas Fishery Cooperation Foundation of Japan (OFCF). The guide utilises information obtained from a series experiments and trials undertaken in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries Studies at the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) led by Dr. Kofi and provides basic processing knowhow for the production of bottled tuna in a concise and reader‐friendly manner. It is envisaged that the information provided in this guide will be refined by further activities and research.

Taro’s hope is this guide provides useful in the promotion of bottled tuna processing and contributes to the development of small‐scale fisheries and associated businesses in member countries. The guide is available for download at the link below.
